Food belongs in bellies—not landfills. :)O<

Is it that big of a deal to throw away food?

To us, food is joy. (And life!) We prefer to hold it close—ideally, in our bellies.

First things first: food is delicious. It’s one of the simple joys in life. We are foodies who savor every bite for so many reasons. But food is, very simply, a life source. It’s a painful reality that 1 in 8 people face food scarcity in America—made more painful by the fact that 40% of food in America is wasted.

We can do better, food friends! By measuring our baseline food waste number in University City, we have taken the first step to tackle this solvable problem. Now, together, we can help save the food!

Food waste is more prevalent than any other material in landfills.

St. Louis aims to reduce landfill waste by 30% by 2030. By reducing—or, ahem, eliminating—our food waste, we can help realize this goal as a community. (Go team, go!)

The Blackbird Foundation is a small team of women committed to bettering our planet.  While we often assist existing projects in reaching their goals, this year we wanted to make a local impact on an issue that was important to us.  We decided to focus on food waste because there is so much potential to help people and the environment, and there seemed like an opportunity to start something new in University City.  We found considerable interest in food waste reduction through working with other local groups, including the University City Green Practices Commission, OneSTL, and Earthday 365.

Don’t let the good go bad.

Hot tip: One of the best ways you can begin to reduce food waste is to track it.
